He followed the haunting music through the dense fog. It grew louder and louder, calling him forward. Enticing. Mesmerizing. The tune was vaguely familiar. Melancholy, tragic, and yet somehow majestic and romantic. He reached the water’s edge and peered ahead, straining his eyes in order to find the music’s origin. He saw movement. He heard small splashes as ripples of current surged.
Interview with Jennifer Christiansen
What inspired you to write?? I really think that I was born to write. As a little girl I carried around journals where I wrote poetry and drew illustrations. Fortunately, my writing was much better than my drawing skills.
Lyla’s Song was inspired by a trip to Ireland. The Irish are storytellers, and I heard many interesting tales during my visit to the Emerald Isle.
Do you have any other work in progress as an author?? Yes, I am in the beginning stages of my next novel in the Echos of Emerald series. I’d also love to create a screen play for Lyla’s Song.
Who is your favorite author?? That’s a difficult question to answer, since there are so many genres, each with a plethora of amazing writers. It’s kind of like comparing apples and pears. One of my favorite modern day writers, however, is Julianna Baggott who also writes under the name N.E. Bode for younger readers. I’ve read all of her children’s book, most of her adult books, and am currently on the third in her young adult Pure series.
What genres do you read?? I mostly read paranormal and fantasy books, but occasionally throw in a thriller or sci-fi. I’m currently reading two books, The Martian by Andy Weir and NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, Stephan King’s son.
Tell me something most people don't know about you?? I can’t keep peanut butter in my house. If I did, I would eat the whole jar with a spoon.
Is any of your characters based off someone you know?? Not at all. Every character was created strictly from my imagination.
Favorite place to travel?? Europe is my favorite. So far Ireland is my number one destination, with Austria a close second.
If you could be anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would you be and why??
My role model is a woman named Lek Chailert who began the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand. She rescues not only abandoned dogs, but elephants that were abused and oftentimes injured in the tourist and logging trades. Of course, she deals with much sadness and backbreaking work, so I’m not sure I would want to be her.
Honestly, I wouldn’t want to permanently trade places with anyone in the world, but I’d love to temporarily step into the shoes of many types of people. When I dream, I am a singer on stage, so possibly I’d transform into an old-school, female rocker with an amazing voice like Ann Wilson from Heart or Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics. Unfortunately, as with drawing, I have little musical talent.
